Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. Her father, a carnival barker, died when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by working as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties: In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. In New York, she volunteered at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. She earned money by working during the day in the ushering department. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
